National Membership Standards

May 26, 2015

Dear Trapper Trails Council Volunteers and Parents,

In light of recent comments by BSA National President Bob Gates about changes to the membership policy of the BSA, please note that nothing has changed at this point with respect to BSA Membership Standards; only adjustments are being considered.  Note that those adjustments would still allow our chartered partners to ensure behavioral standards for the leaders of their own units if those adjustments were to be implemented as stated.

For our LDS partners, we are encouraged that Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, General Young Men President Stephen Owen, and former General Young Men President Charles Dahlquist are all new members of the BSA National Executive Board.  Additionally President Monson, the longest serving member of that board, and General Primary President Rosemary Wixom are members of the National Executive Board as well.  We trust that they will represent the position of the LDS Church to the BSA National Board and that they will monitor those discussions as stated in the recent LDS Newsroom article on the subject.

The Trapper Trails Council has limited ability to impact membership decisions at the national level.  If you have concerns or questions about the statements made by Dr. Gates, your comments will have a larger impact if they are directed to the National Council, Boy Scouts of America.  You are welcome to express your feelings and concerns to the National Key-3 by writing them at key3@scouting.org.
